ipod cord caddy

10 October 2008

On my way to the gym this morning, I thought to myself, "Why hasn't Apple come up with a design solution for the iPod cord mess? All they need to do is put two hooks on the cord and you could wrap the cord around itself."

Well, I don't know if it was the workout or what, but I was suddenly inspired and I couldn't wait to finish my run so I could come home and make this:

ipod cord caddy

It's simply a 1.5" wide piece of elastic sewn together to make a tube, with two buttons sewn onto the front of it. Shank buttons work best as they have some built-in room in the back to fit the cord. Here's a closer look:

You can wrap the cord all the way around the buttons for storage, or use the caddy to shorten the cord when you don't need quite so much length.

And thanks for all the great comments about the ten minute top! Glad everyone enjoyed the toot!

This is straight up genius for those of us who toss our headphones in our purses! I’ll be linking to this.

Structural question- do you have to use elastic? Can you just do a bias strip band? Is the cord supposed to pass through the tube? Thanks for the help.

I love this so much! I have been looking to make something to keep my headphones from tangling! Thank you so much!

Great idea!! I’m thinking that if you sew the elastic on the short ends, you’ll be able to slip the earbuds into them and further secure the entire wrapped cord without unwinding in your purse or pocket.

Sweetness! Just what the world’s been needing! Sheer Genius!

Thanks for the comments everyone! Sid, you don’t HAVE to use elastic but I think it will work best because it will prevent the tube from slipping out of place when the earphones are actually in use. And, Alegnaavlis—great idea to add another elastic tube to the end to tuck the earbuds in place! You peeps are some smart seamsters! :)
